Show your support for sustaining Lewis and Clark Lake behind Gavins Point Dam on the Missouri River.

KEPLETWATER0101.pngRecognizing that Lewis and Clark Lake is already approximately 30 percent full of sediment and projected to be 50 percent full by 2045, I support pursuing a sediment management plan for the region, which would aim to sustain the reservoir and it's ability to store water, thus maintaining benefits for future generations.

I also support the need for river managers, adjacent landowners, river water users and the public to take action to reduce sedimentation by exploring installation of sediment collectors on the Niobrara River. The collectors are estimated to reduce sediment delivery from the Niobrara River by up to 60 percent.

The Missouri River, the last 29 miles of the Niobrara River and the lower 6 miles of the Verdigre Creek are designated as National Rivers for recreational and scenic preservation. The sediment building up because of the regulation of the Missouri River is ruining and will destroy this area, not to mention the destruction of the Lewis and Clark Reservoir. There are engineering and sediment transportation solutions— otherwise, this reach of the Missouri River will be beyond preservation unless there is investment for the long term. Now is the time to face up to reality and avoid the inevitable if nothing is done about it.

This has been a growing problem for many years, because the dam was built in the wrong location.
